An Meá stopped work for one hour on May 5 in order to participate in Stand Together for Safety.
During our Stand Together for Safety event, we used the hazard management process taught in Haz & Zard: The Hazard Management Training Kit to identify some risks we may face in the coming year, and to plan our approach to minimizing them.
Specifically, we:
- Identified a list of activities that we intend to carry out this year which contain elements of risk in relation to the safety of our personnel
- Assessed the risk posed by these activities
- Selected the controls that we intend to use to manage these risks
The session also emphasised the need to intervene to ‘stop the job’ in the event that adequate controls are not in place. At the end of the session, each participant made a personal commitment to a specific safe behaviour.
Stand Together for Safety is a ‘stop work’ safety event held annually across the Australian oil and gas industry. The Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) actively facilitates and promotes the event on behalf of the Australian oil & gas industry.
APPEA describes three key objectives of Stand Together for Safety:
- Reinforce that safety always come before any other consideration
- Provide an opportunity for people to step away from their jobs and have a structured discussion about improving safety
- Provide an opportunity for senior managers and the workforce to engage with each other on safety
